Odaiba's iconic Unicorn Gundam statue will be going away in August after nearly nine years of service. The sad news was relayed at the Gundam Conference Spring 2026 alongside many other updates for the series on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
Standing at over 65 feet tall, the Unicorn Gundam statue in Odaiba was originally unveiled in September 2017 to replace a previous statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. The Unicorn model is taken from the titular Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, released in 2010 as a follow-up to Char's Counterattack. It currently has six different light up transformation sequences based on different Gundam projects alongside a regular transformation during the day.
As for what will replace the statue, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. The official press release notes that the installation will receive new decals alongside other events up until its demise, but the implication that a new Gundam will take Unicorn's place is distinctly absent. Considering that the life-sized walking Gundam in Yokohama also shut down in 2024, perhaps the age of the Mobile Suit has come to an end.
Mobile Suit Gundam, however, is gearing up for a massive year. Not only were new films for Gundam Seed and Wing announced during the Gundam Conference video, but also a massive event by the name of 'GUNDAM-con' in January 2027. What's more, April 7 is now officially Gundam Day to commemorate the broadcast of the first episode of the original series.
