Netflix is developing a live action TV show based on the Persona series with some... questionable talent behind it.
According to Variety, Star Trek: Picard writer Christopher Monfette will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside 21 Laps and Story Kitchen. The former is the studio behind Stranger Things as well as Deadpool & Wolverine and Backrooms, while the latter was founded by Sonic the Hedgehog producer Dmitri M. Johnson as a vehicle for adaptations of non-traditional IPs such as video games. Toru Nakahara from SEGA is also attached as a producer.
Considering the Persona series' overwhelming popularity overseas, it's no surprise to see something like this on the cards. Just the other week, SEGA confirmed in its earnings for 2026 that Persona 5 Royal had sold 8.6 million copies, far outstripping the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Yakuza. Indeed, the studio has already seen immense success with live action adaptations based on the blue blur, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 earning over 425 million USD at the worldwide box office.
Even so, there is reason to be cautious. Not only is Netflix's track record with adapting video game IPs spotty at best, Christopher Monfette doesn't exactly have a perfect portfolio. The third season of Star Trek: Picard is widely considered to be the best of a bad bunch, while that scene from 9-1-1 will forever be the subject of ridicule. Still, you never know.
