There are always small differences between the Japanese and English versions of a Nintendo Direct. Usually, this is because of availability issues, but one huge blind spot from the latest show on June 9 appears to be the remake of Touhou 6: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
Originally released in 2002, The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is widely considered to be the first modern entry in the Touhou series, given that it was released on Microsoft Windows instead of PC-98. What's more, this change was what arguably lead to the series becoming the cultural juggernaut that it is today, since it became playable on modern machines.
Any news regarding The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is worth talking about, but what makes this particular version very exciting is the fact that it is a remake. In a comment provided via X, original creator ZUN remarked that "We remade most of the game data using today's technology" and announced that he had formed a new circle by the name of Shanghai Alice Reprise for the project. The trailer above, shown during the Japanese Nintendo Direct, shows off updated visuals as well as new music.
Those who have attempted to play the original Touhou 6 will know that it is showing its age, so a modern remake is a welcome proposition. Furthermore, the new release means that it will be playable on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 for the very first time, alongside Steam and PlayStation 5.
English is also confirmed for launch, with the fan group Touhou Patch Center apparently involved with the translation.
Touhou Koumakyo: New Classic - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil will release on September 26.
