One of the biggest announcements from Summer Game Fest 2026 over the weekend was Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. To mark the occasion, game director Naoki Hameguchi recently sat down with Famitsu for an interview about the highly anticipated title, discussing both the general concept and some concrete gameplay details.
First of all, regarding the title. According to Hamaguchi, there were many different ideas, but the final decision came down to creative director Tetsuya Nomura.
"As a word that's used in lots of different kinds of media, Nomura thought that it would easy to understand. [...] Revelation also refers to the fact that this is the final installment in the trilogy where many truths will come to light," he explained.
The general theme for the game is "resolve." Just as Cloud and friends now resolve to settle the fight with Sephiroth once and for all, the development team also needed a certain amount of resolve to finish the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. Players, too, need resolve if they intend to make full use of the new gameplay elements added.
One of the most exciting things showed off in the Summer Game Fest trailer is the ability to pilot the Highwind throughout the open world. Hameguchi explained that this is an expanded version of the traversal elements found in Rebirth that allows players to forge their own path throughout the game. What's more, areas from the previous game will reappear in Revelation with new features and quests included.
Due to the massive size of the Highwind, figuring out take-off and landing was an issue. The solution that the team came up with was to have players parachute down to the ground from the ship before returning via fast travel. Hameguchi notes that this came from the design language of battle royale games, including the ill-fated Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier.
In terms of new characters, Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind both join the party this time around. Cid is described as a technical fighter with many attack variations, while Vincent can transform into his beast form at will during battle. Returning characters will also have new attacks and Synergy Abilities.
Another change from both the original game and previous entries in the Remake series is the inclusion of character classes. Hameguchi explained that this is meant to augment the "already perfected" battle system found in Rebirth by allowing players to adjust each characters' play style according to their preferences. In addition, all of the classes will be unlocked at once, giving freedom from the get go.
Not much was said about the story, apart from the fact that this installment will not have multiple endings. Given the focus on truth coming to light, don't expect much more on this until release.
