Get ready to pull out your magical batons! The legendary mahou shoujo pioneer, Minky Momo, is making a comeback to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ashi Productions.

The new project, titled Magical Princess Minky Momo: Akogare no Yume e Magokoro no Duo, was just announced as a special theatrical OVA. This isn't just a simple nostalgia trip; the story is getting a modern 2026 upgrade. Our 12-year-old hero, Momo, gets a smartphone for her birthday and has to save the world from a mysterious app that is draining real “dream energy” in favor of shallow social media likes.
The creative team is stacked with industry vets, including director Ayumu Watanabe and scriptwriter Deko Akao. They’ve promised that while the film will feel familiar to long-time fans (the new poster even pays tribute to the classic look), it’s designed to be a “first meeting” for a brand-new generation of kids.
For fans in Japan in need of something to tide you over until the new OVA drops, BS Nippon TV is rebroadcasting the original 1982 series starting April 4. Plus, if you’re lucky enough to be at AnimeJapan 2026 this weekend (March 28-29), you can snag some limited-edition stickers and see the trailer on the big screen!
