Legendary manga artist Naoki Urasawa has illustrated the music video and jacket for Mexican acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela's new single, titled 'Monster' and inspired by the manga of the same name.
As a creator, Urasawa has never been afraid to draw on his love for music. In 20th Century Boys, the protagonist Kenji Endo famously sings a number shamelessly inspired by both Bob Dylan and John Lennon, simply titled 'Bob Lennon'. What's more, Urasawa actually wrote a book in 2007 with Screen frontman Koji Wakui titled Talkin' About Bob Dylan, detailing his childhood in the 1970s growing up with the titular artist.
Gabriela Quintero from Rodrigo y Gabriela, meanwhile, apparently has a love for Monster. In a comment, she describes it as "an incredible profound story about a psychopathic serial killer," referring to the central antagonist Johan Liebert. The mood and atmosphere of the series then went on to inspire the group's latest single, which starts off mournfully before building in tension and excitement.
In terms of how Urasawa ended up working with Rodrigo y Gabriela, he explained that he had been following the group for a while after seeing some footage of their concerts. After hearing that the duo actually premiered a new song in Tokyo inspired by his series, he immediately contacted their agency and found out that they were big fans. One thing led to another, and he ended up collaborating with them for their new single.
