Another live action adaptation of Nobuyuki Fukumoto's Kaiji is on the way, seven years after a supposed finale. What's more, the official synopsis hints that it will finally touch on previously unadapted material.
The last entry in the Kaiji live action film series premiered in 2020. As the title Kaiji: Final Game suggests, it was widely marketed as the third and final part, but money talks. Domestic box office rankings from 2020 actually saw that last film come in at number eight, earning over 2.6 billion yen (around 19 million USD).
Original creator Nobuyuki Fukumoto explained the situation in a rather frank comment: "To be honest, we already discussed the idea of doing another film once the third one came out. I know that we did number three with the idea of it being a finale, but yeah. Sorry, we're doing another one!"
While the above announcement trailer only contains footage from past entries, the official synopsis explicitly mentions the character of Kazuya Hyodo. Those who have read the original manga will know that Kazuya is the overall antagonist of the series' third part, Gambling Outcast Kaiji, in a story that is still ongoing to this day. No cast beyond returning Tatsuya Fujiwara as the titular protagonist has been confirmed at this point, however.
Kaiji: Jinsei Revenge Game is scheduled to release in Japan on January 29, 2027. Touya Satou will also return to direct.
