The official X account for Tokyo 7th Sisters announced on May 7 that the series' mobile game would be ending service on August 12, 2026. A letter from series producer Yoshifumi Nagata detailed some of the reasons why, citing a changing development environment.
Initially launched in 2014, the Tokyo 7th Sisters mobile game tasks the player with training a cast of rookie idols in a near future setting where idols are considered obsolete. Over a period of 12 years, it has acted as the central focus for a series with a dedicated fanbase, even branching out to live events. An anime movie also premiered in 2021 from LandQ studios.
In his Producer Letter, Nagata explained that he and the team had talked a lot about how to continue Tokyo 7th Sisters within the "continually changing" mobile game market environment. After much consideration, the team eventually reached the conclusion that shutting down the game would be the best decision for longevity of the series, but live events and other tertiary projects will continue. In addition, an offline mode is also being planned so that fans can continue to play once servers go down.
Looking more broadly at the mobile game market, it's no surprise that Tokyo 7th Sisters would choose to shutter its doors. As Nagata says, the sheer number of titles means that competition is fierce, even forcing some titles to end service before they even start. Not every game can be as successful as Gakuen Idolmaster, but the hope is that series can continue to flourish otherwise.
