A major piece of Tokyo's retail history is coming to an end. Hands has officially announced that its iconic Shibuya flagship store will close its doors this November due to the expiration of its lease. The departure marks the end of a remarkable 48-year run since the location first opened on September 9, 1978.
Nestled right behind Shibuya Parco in Udagawacho, the massive 5,494-square-meter store has long been a haven for creators, DIY enthusiasts, and trend-conscious shoppers. Its unique, cross-genre curated floors and highly knowledgeable staff became hallmarks of the brand's identity.
While the closure marks the end of an era, Hands views the location as a core part of its history. The company stated that the lessons learned and customer connections made at the Shibuya branch are "precious assets" that will be used to inspire existing and future stores across Japan. Hands intends to deliver its classic, experiential shopping environment right up until the final closing date, which will be announced in the near future.
The closure comes during a period of steady business for the retailer, which reported ¥72.6 billion in sales for the fiscal year ending February 2026 across its 98 domestic and international locations. It also marks another major milestone since the company was acquired by home improvement giant Cainz from Tokyu Land Corporation Holdings in 2022, a move that prompted its high-profile rebranding from "Tokyu Hands" to simply "Hands."
