McDonald's has officially announced their upcoming collaboration with Evangelion in the form of 3 limited-time burgers, each associated with the core 3 pilots from the iconic anime series. This comes after several days of teasing something would be happening, the announcement of a lottery sale for a series of limited edition toys, and much speculation about what's happening next.
The collaboration was announced in grand style today with a promotional video introducing the burgers, and a new Evangelion Unit-M designed as part of the collaboration.
The burgers themselves are an interesting trio of different flavors, each with a bun that has been said to be designed in the style of the series AT Fields. A quick breakdown of the different burgers themselves:
Rei/Unit-00 has been paired up with the chopped potato & thick beef with rich garlic mayo burger. This is being billed as new to the collaboration, although McDonald's Japan has feature a variety of different burgers using elements of this burger in the past. The garlic mayo is likely the stand-out new ingredient.
Asuka/Unit-02 are the faces for the Mexican cheese chicken burger. This newcomer to the restaurant chain includes taco-meat as a topping for the otherwise standard chicken-sandwich from the chain. It's said to have a spicy taste, but we imagine it'll be your typical "chain restaurant spicy" fare as to not alienate potential customers.
Last but not least are Shinji/Unit-01 adorning the tried and true cheese double teriyaki burger. Out of the 3 this one has been available in the past, but the teriyaki burger is a fan favorite and the double patty with the special bun will make it a standout on the menu.
Each of the 3 burgers will be available at McDonald's restaurants starting January 6, 2025 and will be on sale through early February so there will be plenty of time to try them out. It's a surprising collaboration to be sure, but so far all of the branding has been on point so we're hoping the flavors will be as well.
