You know you've made it as a character when the official konbini tie-up series arrives. Congrats are in order for Puppet Sunsun, a blue fuzzball who has shot to popularity in recent years thanks to their online presence. Now the huggable creation can lay claim to their own series of limited-time items currently on sale at Seven-Eleven stores across Japan.
I will admit to having little in-depth knowledge of the Sunsun extended universe — I'm more of an old-school Rilakkuma kind of guy — so maybe I'm missing an actual theme connecting all the foods making up this campaign. The savory options are an absolute no-go, featuring a hybrid bread trying to cram as many unappetizing ingredients into a single baked good alongside a carb-on-carb "Napolitan Roll." The sweets provide something much more appealing, but even then the flavors and forms jump all over the place, with the only consistent being Sunsun on the packaging.
The blueberry marshmallow daifuku jumps out, partially because its shade actually resembles Sunsun's own appearance. It is indeed squishy and chewy, with the center of this soft dessert filled with whipped cream and blueberry sauce. This combo tastes great...when there's enough to mingle. Maybe I got a flukey one, but the amount of sauce within seems scant, and also tends to goop up in one place, resulting in most of this treat just being whipped cream. Can an emerging puppet star get a little more consistency here?
