It's easy to forget that, amidst all the global praise for the overall quality of product provided and general TikTok celebration of such stores, konbini primarily provide convenience. And what's more convenient than stacking a variety of fried foods on top of one another to create a meal-worthy treat?
Lawson offers something akin to a konbini version of the KFC Double Down with a new item that uses two fluffy curry breads as buns to sandwich a honkin' minced-meat cutlet. Featuring a tagline that even finds the brand admitting it's “too much!,” this carb-tastic creation is one of the most intimidating releases in the industry as of late.
For the first 50 percent, however, it's actually a surprisingly tasty combination. While it's a lot, the curry bread proves soft enough that it actually works as buns (whereas two pieces of fried chicken is tasty but unnerving). The curry filling, meanwhile, actually adds a nice spice counter to the saucier cutlet at the center, and when the glob of mustard enters in, this become a surprisingly complimentary trio of flavors.
Then you realize you still have a half of this thing to eat and your stomach starts hurting. This is a lot of food and heavy at that. The cutlet, in particular, is sizable and, unlike the promotional picture, extends well beyond the already savory buns containing it. Coming in at nearly 700 calories, this functions as an entire lunch that will make you feel terrible afterwards. Consider saving this for two sessions, to enjoy the taste better and get even more value out of an already reasonable ¥192 price tag. Convenient and cost conscious.
