The Danganronpa 2x2 game has been delayed from 2026 to an early 2027 release, only fueling hopes that this 'remake' is more than meets the eye.
No particular reason was given in a message from Shohei Sakakibara. The Spike Chunsoft producer merely remarked that while development was "progressing toward a 2026 release," the team have decided to move the launch to early 2027. A more concrete release date will be given further down the line.
Considering that Danganronpa 2x2 is supposed to be a remake of the original Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair from 2012, it's somewhat surprising that development has come up against such a roadblock. Of course, the theory that this is actually the fourth entry in the series is alive and well, if not because of the obvious math in the title then because of the two different modes included in the remake.

As previously announced, Danganronpa 2x2 contains both the original scenario from 2012 in addition to a new storyline with different victims and culprits. Over the weekend, Spike Chunsoft revealed that this new game mode is called 'Slayhem' and that it offers "approximately 20% more content" than the base game. Could this extra content be enough to constitute a new entry, possibly laying the foundation for a new trilogy?
