Located in Ikebukuro's Sunshine City mall, Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo is the franchise's flagship retail store that attracts thousands of visitors both domestic and foreign every single day. Earlier this year on March 26, a store clerk was stabbed to death by an ex-boyfriend in a murder-suicide that took place before a crowd of customers. The perpetrator had been reported for stalking previously, prompting widespread criticism of the police response.

In an announcement from July 27, the Pokémon Center announced that it was finally planning to reopen the Mega Tokyo store after carrying out a series of renovations. New measures have also been taken to ensure the safety of customers and staff alike, which should provide some piece of mind. Entry restrictions may be in place for a while to deal with the backlog of demand.

Ever since the homicide, many stores on the same floor as Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo have remained closed, providing a visible reminder of the tragedy and casting a dark cloud over the entire area.
