Emerging Japanese girl group kiOra has officially released their debut single, "Coco," introducing a new musical style they call “TOKYO HYPER CITY POP”—a blend of cutting-edge hyperpop and classic city pop melodies. The track's music video received a special advance screening on August 8 at the HEAD IN THE CLOUDS Music & Arts Festival in Los Angeles before launching on the group's official YouTube channel.
The single's sound was crafted by a panel of hitmaking producers and songwriters, including her0ism, Yaeji, Mechatok, Kanata Okajima, and Chelsea Warner.
Visualizing their core concept, the “Coco” music video places the group inside stylized Japanese settings, including public bathhouses, tatami rooms, dry rock gardens, and a conveyor-belt sushi lane repurposed into a fashion runway.
"By mixing familiar Japanese elements like a sushi counter with the unexpected, like a fashion runway, we aimed for iconic visuals that feel familiar yet completely fresh," said Music Video Director Riku Ozama. "To me, kiOra's debut is like a soap bubble just as it bursts, and I hope they reach the whole world."
The group members watched the video alongside festival attendees in Los Angeles. Member OTO shared, "I loved shooting this music video, packed with everything wonderful about kiOra and Japanese culture! And it was so special to see everyone’s reactions in-person." Fellow member YU added, "I was moved to have our music video played in such a wonderful place. I hope this leads to even more people around the world learning about kiOra."
Following their Los Angeles debut, kiOra is set to perform in Asia on August 29 with their first-ever show in Thailand at Nippon Haku Bangkok.
