Cygames has launched a new in-house label called CygamesEdge for small to medium-sized titles with the aim of driving innovation.
The label was revealed during the State of Play live stream on September 3 alongside its debut title, Where the Seeds Fall. Launching on November 5, this three-hour narrative experience takes the form of a vertical journey down the branches of a giant tree that plays on the feelings of vertigo-induced danger and fear. Once the main story is completed, players can test their skills in extra modes and challenges, including one geared towards speedrunning.
As for CygamesEdge, this new brand is meant to empower smaller teams within the company to bring innovative ideas to life. This is a similar initiative to GYAAR Studio by Bandai Namco, except that acts as an onboarding project for new hires. ZEREO Inc. is credited as a co-developer on the Steam page, and their portfolio includes such titles as Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero and Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
Given the ease of distribution through digital platforms as Steam and the difficulty Cygames has seen in getting such projects as Project Awakening off the ground, perhaps this is a well needed change of pace. The short length of Where the Seeds Fall, combined with its speedrunning focus, might also make it a perfect title for live streaming.
