Legendary director Hiroyuki Imaishi and screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima have announced that production has begun in earnest on their fourth collaborative project following the release of Promare in 2019.
In a video first shown at Anime Expo 2026, Nakashima explained that the original plan was to put out a new project pretty much straight after Promare. Even so, the production process took longer than expected, with both parties working on other things in the meantime. One of the reasons why the announcement is being made now is because the script is ready and Imaishi is working on the storyboards, but Nakashima cautioned that it could still take a few years to come to fruition.
What exactly this new project will entail is left vague, but Nakashima described it as the "culmination" of his entire career up until this point. Similarly, Imaishi remarked that it is something that "bring[s] together" everything he's done so far. As to whether this is a new movie, TV series, or something completely different, we'll just have to wait and see.
Imaishi and Nakashima began their collaboration in 2007 with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann at Gainax. After the formation of Studio TRIGGER in 2011, the pair produced Kill la Kill and Promare in 2013 and 2019 respectively.
