It turns out that the upcoming mobile title for Girls Band Cry is not a rhythm game, but a deck builder.
The surprising news came as part of the first trailer for the project, titled Girls Band Cry: First Riff. While it mostly consists of performance scenes and character introductions, several instances show gameplay based around cards and mysterious multipliers. Furthermore, the video description states that the title is a "girls rock RPG."
Given that other 2.5D series such as Love Live! and Bang Dream! have defaulted to a rhythm game style in the past, First Riff seems somewhat refreshing. The decision also could be seen as a response to the overwhelming success of Gakuen Idolmaster, another title that eschewed industry conventions to focus on deck builder gameplay.
