Chiyoda City is installing smart trash cans in the area around Akihabara Station to combat recent issues of littering.
Akiba Guide spotted the new devices under wraps on November 2. The city announced back in September that it would invest in the somewhat rare sight, following other cities with high volumes of tourists such as Hakone. Residents have complained about the littering problem for a while now, particularly when trash cans next to vending machines fill up over the weekend when foot traffic is the highest.

Unlike normal trash cans, the smart variety can compact automatically before reaching capacity and provide real time data for more efficient garbage disposal, all the while relying on solar power provided by panels installed on the top.
