In a first for the Tokaido Shinkansen line, Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) has announced it will operate a special “same-day departure, next-morning arrival” bullet train this summer. Dubbed the Tokaido Lumiere Express, the service aims to offer a unique Shinkansen experience.
According to JR Central, the name “Lumiere” (French for light) was chosen to evoke the imagery of morning light and the start of a new day, highlighting the train’s primary benefit: maximizing a traveler's itinerary from the earliest hours of the morning.
The special train is scheduled to depart Tokyo Station at 22:00 on Saturday, August 8, 2026, making subsequent pickups at Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama. Rather than completing the trip at high speed, the train will pull into Gifu-Hashima Station at midnight and park on the tracks for six hours, allowing passengers to sleep onboard. The voyage resumes early the next morning, arriving in Kyoto at 6:44 and terminating at Shin-Osaka at 6:59 on Sunday, August 9.
However, passengers looking for a traditional luxury sleeper experience should prepare for a utilitarian environment. JR Central noted that the train's cabin lights will remain fully turned on throughout the night. Additionally, track maintenance will be actively occurring at Gifu-Hashima Station during the stop, meaning passengers may experience audible noise and physical vibrations.
Onboard amenities will also be heavily restricted. There will be no food or beverage cart sales, and the standard smartphone mobile ordering service will be unavailable—even for premium Green Car passengers. While the train doors will open briefly at Gifu-Hashima Station, travelers will not be permitted to leave the station gates and will only have access to platform vending machines and smoking areas.
Tickets for this unique experience will be sold exclusively as designated travel packages through the JR Central Tours website starting Friday, July 3, 2026, at 14:00. An adult ticket for an ordinary reserved seat from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is priced at ¥15,000 (tax included), with Green Car and children's packages also available.
