JR East has launched a public voting process to select its next official Suica image character, marking a major turning point for Japan's most recognizable transit card mascot. The winning design will replace the iconic Suica Penguin, which is set to retire on March 31, 2027, after a 25-year tenure.
The transition forms part of the company's “Suica Renaissance” initiative under its “Yusho 2034” management vision. The project aims to expand Suica's role beyond a transit and micro-payment card into a broader digital lifestyle tool. Three finalist designs created by emerging artists were chosen by a committee led by writer Kundo Koyama and actor Kenjiro Tsuda, drawing on input from JR East employees for a companion-like figure.

Voting runs online from September 8 through September 23, 2026, and is open globally to anyone submitting a single entry. JR East will officially unveil the winning character on November 18, 2026, to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Suica's debut, followed by a public contest to name the new mascot.
