JR East has announced that its famous Suica Penguin mascot will officially retire at the end of fiscal year 2026, concluding a 25-year run as the face of Japan's most prominent transit card. Originally introduced in 2001, the beloved character created by illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki will pass the baton to a brand-new mascot following a year-long farewell celebration titled "Penguin Years."

To commemorate both the character's legacy and Suica's upcoming 25th anniversary in November 2026, JR East is rolling out a series of public campaigns. Starting September 2026, fans can participate in a LINE-integrated mystery-solving rally, enter story submission contests to win signed artwork, and receive exclusive merchandise at PenSta retail outlets.

Autumn highlights include a 20-location digital stamp rally starting October 1, a six-day fan event at JR Ueno Station from October 30 to November 4, and a fully wrapped Suica Penguin train operating on the Yamanote Line in November.

Alongside the mascot's retirement, physical Suica cards featuring the penguin illustration will be phased out as current stocks deplete, transitioning to plain card designs. Digital cards in Apple Wallet will also temporarily display a plain design until the new mascot debuts on Mobile Suica and digital platforms in early 2027.
