To celebrate six decades of Japan’s most iconic giant hero, a new documentary titled THE ORIGIN OF ULTRAMAN is set to release on July 3. The film aims to deconstruct the cultural DNA of the franchise, investigating how a silver titan from Nebula M78 grew to become a global phenomenon.
The project features a staggering lineup of international creative heavyweights. Renowned directors such as Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn join Japanese masters like Hideaki Anno and Hirokazu Kore-eda to discuss the profound impact the series had on their own artistic visions. The film will also feature insights from legendary game designer Hideo Kojima and surviving members of the original 1966 cast and crew.
Directed by Yu Nakamura and Kazuki Yoshida, the documentary promises a deep dive into the evolution of the series, from its technical innovations in tokusatsu to its philosophical underpinnings.

To accompany the release date announcement the official poster for the documentart featuring a stoic, front-facing Ultraman has also been revealed. The film is set to stand as a definitive tribute to a legacy that continues to inspire creators across every medium of entertainment.
