Netflix is kicking off 2027 with a brand-new original Japanese comedy. Starring Sanctuary breakout Wataru Ichinose alongside Suzu Hirose, Fujiyama BOY tells the story of an eight-year shut-in who decides to turn his life around for the ultimate romantic long shot.
The series follows Kanta (Ichinose), a recluse who learns his mother is terminally ill. After she casually mentions a dream of him marrying top idol Mami Hamamiya (Hirose), Kanta vows to make it happen before she passes. Armed with zero social skills, he steps out into the real world to tackle a series of self-improvement "missions" that lead him to a cast of wild characters.
Directed by Yu Irie (Muromachi Burai) with a script from romance-comedy veteran Shigeki Kaneko (Proposal Daisakusen), the show aims for a balance of absurd humor and genuine emotional growth.
Ichinose shared that he gave the role his all after Netflix "changed his life" with Sanctuary, while Hirose teased that the series turned out to be an incredibly passionate, energetic ride.
Fujiyama BOY premieres globally on Netflix in January 2027.
