Sandwiches from convenience stores aren't always a winning choice. Yes, yes, the egg salad sandwich is a venerated item celebrated by everyone from Anthony Bourdain to a random Instagram influencer, but beyond that you often have measly bits of lettuce and meat or chunks of deep-fried stuff put between bread.
Credit to Seven-Eleven Japan, which has been trying to elevate this genre of grab-and-go food in 2026. They've had hits here and there over the years, but starting with the Philly Cheesesteak the chain has been on a particular roll. The variety is better and the quality a step up, at least within the context of this shelf.
Now comes the Kebab Chicken Sandwich. Inspired by a food seemingly served up by at least one window-service joint in every neighborhood, this sandwich features chicken and a variety of vegetables smothered in a zesty kebab sauce.
Like the cheesesteak before it, I need to be clear — this doesn't touch a nice, hot pita stuffed with meat, and it's worth noting that's a food far more readily available in Japan than Philly's finest. But from the perspective of "konbini sandwich," what a delight. This replicates the familiar taste and just-hot-enough sensation of eating an actual kebab to make it work in a pinch. Most importantly, it shows there's still plenty of room for the convenience store sandwich to keep improving.
