Despite the ease of access that streaming has brought to the distribution of music, the volume that's released can make it a daunting task to find unique new stuff every week. In this recurring weekly feature we put together a short list of new songs that stand out amongst all the noise and deserve a spot in your rotation.
All songs featured in this recurring series can be found in our scrmbl selection 2025 playlist on Spotify or Apple Music.
The latest from singer songwriter/trackmaker AAAMYYY is perfectly represented by its title. This is truly a song you can easily just kick back to. AAAMYYY's beautiful, if not a little haunting, vocal style is the star of the show while getting a boost from Chinza DOPENESS' signature flow. Cap it off with additional production/composing support fron Neetz and what you end up with is hip-hop/R&B at its core but still something unique and a fitting addition to AAAMYYY's already excellent catalog.
J-pop star Fujii Kaze often sees the positive via his pop music. He has brushed aside life's challenges in favor of embracing the matsuri spirit and even celebrated the act of working hard. Latest single "Masshiro" stands out for how it lets the melancholy slip in. Starting with what almost sounds like sung sights, Kaze moves forward over a breezy acoustic arrangement, but in a way where he's more accepting of moving on from something potentially good. It's him at his most bittersweet, chin held up but letting the sadness sneak through. Listen above.
hayamie and SKYTOPIA have created a sonic time machine with their latest track "Control (feat. VOYOON)". Going into this completely blind, I don't think anyone would blame you if you thought this was a lost 90's club classic that had just resurfaced. The groovy club filling production from hayamie and SKYTOPIA is also perfectly complimented by VOYOON's vocals. It's pure, it's simple, but it's also brilliant and it's the type of track that is just begging to be heard on the dance floor.
A rumbling electronic track built on sputtering vocal samples buzzsaws forward, but ever-eclectic idol outfit meme tokyo. add no shortage of charm to the madness. At times they offer melodic lift to the sprinting pace, and at other times sharp pivot into tougher rap interludes as the music around them sharpens. It's a whirlwind listen, but one with heart at its core. Listen above.
Nami Shimada's "SUN SHOWER" is a certified classic recognized equally for its original take as well as a slate of excellent remixes led by Soichi Terada. This past week saw a re-release of the remix suite first released in the 90s, then again in the early 2000s with additional tracks, and this time reworked with updated remixes and a new inclusion from tofubeats. His take on the track is significantly more stripped down than many of the other remixes, but in doing so it allows Shimada's vocals more room to breathe before pumping things up for the chorus. It's a welcome addition to an already excellent collection of tracks, and a great update for 2025.
One of the most exciting rock outfits in Tokyo links up with a member of rap force Dos Monos for a meditation on modern times. Texas 3000 lays down a sparse and downright creeping backdrop for Botsu to work over. He delivers rhymes about the often alienting realities of today, before expressing all that confusion via vocal noise. The slow build makes the moment where the music and Botsu erupt for "Other's" final stretch all the stronger. Listen above.
